WPR READY TO CONQUER THE MOUNTAIN

6th October 2009

Round 7 of the Yokohama V8 Ute series gets underway this weekend and it’s the event the Wollongong Performance Racing team have been waiting for, the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

Wollongong Performance Racing has been working hard for the last 8 weeks preparing the Selectv Ute #13 Ute for the upcoming round at the mountain.

Marketing Manager Jaimie Carson says “the break has been really good for us. Instead of having to rushed between rounds we have been able to pace ourselves a little. We had engines problems at the last round so the engine has come out of the ute and been sent away for repairs, HSR Accident Repairs have done a ‘mini makeover’ on the ute in the lead up to Bathurst and our #1 mechanic Dave Oppert has been getting the ute ready for the Bathurst circuit”.

For Wollongong’s Gary Carson it will be his first ever drive around Bathurst. “ I have been to Bathurst for the last 5 or so years as the team manager but it will definitely be a whole new experience this year being behind the wheel. I can’t wait to go for my first lap around here. I think driving the #13 Selectv Ute across the top of the mountain for that very first time will be something I’ll never forget. Everyone talks about Bathurst and I’m so glad that I’ll actually be able to say that I’ve raced around it”.

The round will play a significant role to Carson in his chase for Rookie of the Year honours as well. Gary explains “I am currently in a pretty hot battle for the Rookie of the Year crown. I’m currently 20 points behind, which is nothing. A good round at ‘the mountain’ and we could be leaving with a good points haul and leading the chase. If I win the Rookie of the Year I get to test in a Supercheap Auto V8 Supercar so I will be pushing hard to win it”.

The V8 utes will complete 2 x 20 minute practice session on Thursday morning before a 20 minute qualifying session on Friday. They will take to the track on Saturday for the first 7 lap race, followed by another 7 lap reverse grid race on Saturday afternoon and then the final race of the weekend just before the main Supercar race on Sunday morning.
